about

"Hope this is good enough... please edit and add whatever else you'd like in there i'm open to edits! wrote this one after a few too many chaannnddyysssss.....

Ex-Rental implies some kind of past tense debacle that requires you to return to sender. However, this solo project from Concrete Lawn’s Jack De Lacy features a kind of demented pop music that is very now. 2018, a strange year. Overrun by internet people-punks and tastemakers who decide what’s worth your time through their youtube channels or soundclouds. But a cloud is in the sky is it not? Melodies that fade and swell in a sort of Swell Maps way feed into Ex-Rental’s empty soundscape.

It’s sometimes hard to write nice things about music that doesn’t exactly land in key by a classically trained ear. Similar to his work in Dual Citizen there are moments of pop nostalgia mixed with noisey, uncomfortable arrangements that disorientate the listener into a state of “what the fuck is this?” I’m not quite sure the answer to that question but I certainly like it… and it’s definitely not the first time I’ve had this reaction to his music. Ex-Rental takes no prisoners - it leaves you feeling hopeless but also like all great experimental punk releases makes you examine what is punk now. Especially in 2018, a time where the internet dominates most peoples lives and I’m getting life-changing advice from a girl on a dating app. "
